On behalf of the East Coast Swans, it is both an honour and a privilege to formally acknowledge Garry Lohrey as a Life Member of our football club.
Garry, affectionately known as Garfield, has embodied the spirit and values of the Swans for decades—first as a committed player in the late 70s, and later as one of our most passionate and hard-working volunteers. Garfield’s unwavering dedication over well more than ten years has seen him contribute more time and effort to the club than perhaps anyone else. Whether rain, hail or sunshine, he’s been a constant presence as Reserves Goal umpire, always performing his role with pride and reliability.
Beyond his on-field contributions, Garfield’s generosity has been evident in countless other ways. He’s donated fresh vegetables, prepared and served meals for players, and never shied away from the less glamorous tasks of cleaning and packing up. The number of spuds and carrots that he has peel would make a pretty significant pile.
Our much-appreciated weekly wood raffles have been a major source of funds, and Garfield has been instrumental in their success—cutting wood, selling tickets, and always providing a friendly face for a chat. Many in our community look forward to their weekly catch-up with him just as much as the chance to win.
Garfield's impact extends to our annual heritage game at Pyengana, where his efforts behind the scenes helped lay the groundwork for what has become a cherished event. His willingness to jump in wherever needed, from working on the gate to serving on the general committee, and even driving trucks to help build up the oval, shows a level of commitment that is truly rare.
All of these contributions have been made with a generous heart, a ready smile, and a genuine desire to see the East Coast Swans flourish as a welcoming and thriving club.
Garfield, you are a true champion. On behalf of the entire club, we extend our deepest thanks and congratulations.
Fellow Life Member Stephanie Breen will accompanying Garry to the podium for the presentation of his Life Membership Medallion—a well-deserved honour for a remarkable Swan.
